Social Media explained

Now for a few good books....

This is our kind of book club.

Types of Social Media & Online Channels used by National Library of Australia

Looking at the different libraries - public, academic and specialist - they use a variety of combinations of Social Media and some use none at all.

So I went to see what National Library of Australia (NLA) uses. NLA uses Social Media for public and internal - corporate - use.

TROVE is my go to portal for NLA and they use:

Blogs
Forums
Twitter
Flickr
Screencasting/podcasting
YouTube

As well as above NLA has available:
Facebook
Wikis
+flicker common (out of copyright images)
Slideshare
Google+

Making NLA accessible to a wide community of electronic users.

Personal devices and the library

The library catalogue has be modified for easy access on android and iPhones.

There once was a time when patrons would arrive at the counter with a piece of paper with the call number of the book that they are looking for on it. Now they arrive with the catalogue in hand or a photo of the call number to collect an item from the reserve shelf.

One thing I noticed whilst on work placement was the amount of IT information you needed to know that was not directly involved with the library but was part of the client service.

The information contained in the archives may be interesting but please handle with care.

Whilst talking to people who worked in the State Library Newspaper Collection, they made mention that these pressures artefacts harbour organisms that can make a person very sick.

So if you every come across an item that is suspiciously growing things (no matter how small), bag the whole item up very carefully and walk away.

Wiki:

Whilst on work placement I got to deal with a lot of new technology.

One was placing information onto the libraries Wiki pages.

One load of data was close access and for statistics the other was for the Geoffrey Blainey Research Centre.

https://www.google.com.au/?gws_rd=ssl#q=geoffrey+blainey+research+centre

where the information went onto the Victorian Collections website

I found this work very interesting, assisting students in research questions and learning about the history of the area.

Libraries and social media

The nearby University utilises Facebook, twitter and YouTube as part of it's library service to its patrons.

At a glance my region library does not offer this type of social media connection with their patrons.

First post of many

Saturday 5 April, 2014

First of many Blogger posts. It took me a while to get here, but patience, time and no distractions resulted in this positive post. Along with mastering this side of technology and learning (discovering things that I did not event think I could do) I shall address the tasks at hand and hope to have a neat package of information.

Till next post happy blogging.

Maureen.
